Introduction to Sashiko embroidery: Saturday 20th April 1pm-4pm
Sashiko (traslated as ‘little stabs’) is a simple but beautiful form of Japanese embroidery. Thought to have originated in 17th Century Japanese, Sashiko was originally used as a way to strengthen fabric layers to make them more durable.
More recently it has been used to create stunning textile pieces , the patterns adding both texture and beauty to plain fabrics.
Sashiko is a simple but beautiful form of hand embroidery, originating from Japan.It creates stunning geometric designs and is very multi-functional.
It is a fantastic way to repair garments using visible mending making them stronger and more durable. Sashiko can also be used to create cushion covers , bags and decorative household items such as coasters , table mats and wall hangings. It is perfect for upcycling fabrics in truly breathtaking new ways.
In this 3 hour workshop with Oryx Needlecraft we will cover
Hitomezashi- one stitch Sashiko
Moyouzashi - pattern Sashiko
Tsukuroi Sashi - darning Sashiko
You will learn how to use visible mending to repair garments as well as how to transfer designs onto fabric.
Suitability: Beginner up, 18+

Instructor: Sherri Conn
Sherri is passionate about restoration and re-use, and has worked as a professional restorer for over 12 years. She has also run workshops in her field for many years, in Scotland and overseas. In addition to Sashiko, Sherri also teaches the Japanese art of Kintsugi, a method of ceramics restoration that highlights imperfections rather than hiding them.
